Vo dvortsakh i shatrakh: islamskii mir ot kitaia do Evropy (In Palaces and Tents: The Islamic World from China to Europe), 9785935722678

St. Petersburg: Herm / Chistyi list, 2008. Sewn pb. The theme of this Hermitage exhibition catalogue is Islam’s visual dialogue with neighboring cultures, what it gave and what it received. Owing to Russia’s long border with Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries, some of which were part of its empire, trade, diplomacy, and war with Islamic countries were constant. One felicitous result of these relations is the great collection of Islamic art originating in a range of Middle Eastern, Central Asian and other countries held at the Hermitage. Among the subjects are the art of Arab countries from the tenth to the thirteenth century; Iranian art and Central Asian art before the Mongolian conquest; metalwork; art of Islamic Spain and Ottoman Turkey; Persian painting and Iranian metalwork and ceramics; Indian art in the Mongol, and the interaction of Chinese and Islamic art. The authors thus follow the development of Islamic art at various times and in many different places.
