St. Petersburg: Pavlovsk, 2023. sewn pb. The written documents and visual ones — paintings, prints, and photographs — published in this catalogue of an exhibition at Pavlovsk Palace-Preserve come from collections at Pavlovsk, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the State Archive, and Pushkin House. They recount together with the authors' narrative the difficult courtship and early period of Elena Pavlovna, betrothed to Emperor Pauls son Mikhail, who showed little interest in his fiancée. By the openness of her character and excellent upbringing in Stuttgart and Paris, she established a good rapport with Empress Maria Fedorovna, Alexander I's wife and the arbiter of domestic affairs in the imperial family. She learned Russian, converted to the Orthodox religion, and took a keen interest in the life of the imperial capital. Once married in 1824, she made her home in the Michael Palace (now the Russian Museum) a center of the capital's social life and established herself as an initiator of philanthropic organizations and patron of artistic endeavors. Described as a "phenomenon" in the imperial family, she raised the standards of court life. 197 p.,23 x 25 cm, approx. 100 color and b/w illus.,Rus. Item #4641
