This Russian Museum monograph on an artist whose work during the avant-garde period is neither abstract nor realistic conveys both the originality of Filonov's work and the precarious position of an artist in the early Soviet period. Filonov was given commissions by the state but as his diary entries show he had to tread carefully to avoid the wrong tone or style — a work intended to glorify the 1917 revolution could be branded counter-revolutionary if there was too much originality or too little optimism. Such works as "Shop Floor of the Putilov Tractor Factory" and "Shock Workers of the Red Dawn Factory" had to document both technical progress and the improvement of the worker's lot. Extracts from diaries and correspondence by Filonov and his contemporaries give a palpable sense of the lot of the artist.
