Moscow: Tret'iakovskaia galereia, 2018. Sewn cl. The Tretyakov Gallery has works by all the major painters and many by less well-known artists, whose works create a broad context of the period. Such qualified experts as Valentin Serov helped the museum in the early years of the twentieth century build its collections and find representative works from most strains of art current in the last years of the Imperial period, the revolutionary years and the 1920s. After 1929 the Soviet government required artists to tout the achievements of the state and paint such subjects as collective farms and factories and thus burgeoned the style that became known as Socialist Realism. The artists associations of the 1920s such as the Association of Easel Painting and the Association of Moscow Painters were no longer allowed to exhibit, and so-called formalism of experimental artists became taboo. Already hung in the galleries in the 1920s, works by avant-garde artists were removed in 1936 as were examples of earlier aesthetic movements like the Blue Rose and World of Art. Promoted were the artists who were seen as heirs of the peredvizhniki or those who adapted their radical styles to fit the ideology of the Soviet regime. Such innovators of the 1920s as Alexander Deineka, Yurii Pimenov and Labas began idealizing Soviet reality. Works highlighting the positive aspects of the Soviet system by artists like Sergei Gerasimov, Vasilii Efanov, Iosif Brodskii, and Arkady Plastov predominated in the galleries of twentieth-century art. The catalogue entries are arranged by artists and begin by summarizing their training and careers, listing personal and group exhibitions, and noting archival and published writings about them. Appendixes reproduce artist's signatures and list exhibitions and exhibition catalogues.
