Evropeiskoe kholodnoe oruzhie (European Blade Weapons)
St. Petersburg: Atlant, 2009 (2nd ed. corrected and enlarged). sewn cl. The extraordinary breadth of the arms collection of the Museum of Artillery, Engineering and Communication Troops (St. Petersburg) enables the author to survey the history of each kind of blade weapon as it developed in various countries of Europe. Although the majority of the pieces are combat weapons rather than ceremonial arms, they often have engraved blades and decorated hilts, showing the kinship of arms- and jewelry-making. The author gives an overview of the collection and then catalogues 528 works. Arms from England, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Austria from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century are the most numerous; there are also some of earlier and later manufacture, and representative pieces from other countries (e.g., Scotland, Spain, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Denmark). 548 pp., 8 x 10 1/8 ins., 197 line drawings, 558 color illus., Rus.
