Peterburg Ivana Bianki: Poste Restante (Ivan Bianki's Petersburg: Poste Restante)

St. Petersburg: Fotorossika, 2015. sewn pb. The first photographer to choose the grand spaces of the Russian imperial capital as his subject was of Swiss origin and had worked in Paris as a photographer in the early 1850s. He captured the grandeur of St. Petersburg's formal ensembles set among bridges and river banks, the splendor of its churches and palaces, their façades and interiors. He fixed the theaters and works of sculpture, and also was drawn to the city's inhabitants, photographing both portraits and street types. In this monograph the author elaborates on the career of a photographer, the difficulties of developing the new art in the mid nineteenth century. The author has drawn on photographs from thirteen collections in Switzerland and Russia to demonstrate the key role Giovanni or Ivan Bianki played in the early history of Russian photography. He was both a visual chronicler of a mid-nineteenth European capital and an early photographer-artist. 165 p., 20 cm, approx. 150 b/w illus., Rus. Item #491
