Butz and French and German jewelers of the nineteenth century naturally drew commissions from the imperial court. Medieval and eighteenth-century bible covers, chalices, crosses and icon frames illustrate a particularly lavish from of ecclesiastical art. The Russian empire's long trade and military interactions with its Middle Eastern and Central Asian neighbors led to the Hermitage's having many works including jewelry, sculpture, and arms, originating in the Ottoman Empire, Iran, Central Asia and India. The museum's collection of works incorporating emerald from the ancient period, especially various forms of carved stones (cameos, etc.), is unexcelled.
