St. Petersburg: Herm, 2024. This edition of the Hermitage's series on porcelain draws on its rich collection of works that are displayed mainly at the museum of the Imperial Porcelain Factory affiliated with the Hermitage. Orientalism had long been a vein of European art, but in Russia and the Soviet Union even more so — the Russian Empire's long border with Central Asia and the USSR's newly incorporated Central Asian republics made the Orient a natural subject for artists. Works of the 1920s and 30s show the high artistic achievements of the avant-garde and early Soviet periods and continue the interest in Asia of early twentieth-century artists connected with the World of Art and Diagilev's Ballets russes. The tendency of Soviet art to be propagandistic is also evident; for example, a former denizen of a harem is pictured in contemporary clothing reading a Soviet newspaper and images of technology introduced to modernize agriculture in an arid region. The Hermitage series is not purely art-historical but includes works by contemporary porcelain artists. 238 p., 27 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus. with title page and summary in ENGLISH.
