Some very early works of the 1200s and 1300s begin this catalogue of an exhibition and show vestiges of the Byzantine style which came to Rus' in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The authors and curators point out how this early style changed during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when most of the icons in this catalogue were painted. They also explain the distinct colors used in the Rostov icons, which are related to the extent of the region and its diocese stretching to Novgorod and the far north.
