Established in 1876 with funds provided by the banker and art patron Alexander von Stieglitz, the School of Technical Drawing became an example of a new form of art education that sought to reconcile fine art, hand craftsmanship and technology. Stieglitz invested one million rubles to build the school’s collection of applied and decorative arts from Western Europe covering the medieval period to the late eighteenth century. Its purpose was to inspire students with high aesthetic standards as they worked with new technologies. The building designed to house the collection and the school shows historicism at its best and echoes the Italian Renaissance. After the 1917 revolution the collection became part of the Hermitage.
