The unusual theme of the exhibition on which this Hermitage catalogue is based: how portrait painting far from the imperial capital, where the Academy of Arts trained professional artists, was both different from and similar to the painting of artists trained in St. Petersburg and Western Europe, a stint in Western Europe being the usual culmination of art education at the academy. A distinct aspect of provincial painting in Russia before the revolution were the ubiquitous icon-painting workshops, so many of the provincial portraits were painted by icon-painters branching out into secular painting, which imparts to many of the works show a severe and dignified style akin to icons. Most Hermitage exhibitions draw on the main collections built by two centuries of the emperors' and empresses' collecting from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. This catalogue, however, publishes a part of the Hermitage collections that comes from the provincial gentry's collections many of which were expropriated after the 1917 revolution.
