Chapters cover the history of the collection: such important moments in the growth of the collection as Catherine the Great’s gifts to Grand Duke Paul and Grand Duchess Maria Fedorovna; Paul and Maria Fedorovna’s ambitious collecting during their travels in Western Europe; Maria Fedorovna’s commissions in the early nineteenth century; the efforts of their heirs to preserve, catalogue, and exhibit the collections; Konstantin Konstantinovich’s skilfull additions in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; and the dismal period of selling by the Soviet state in the 1920s and 1930s. The the catalogue is both a serious study of the art and a history of collecting in Russia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. All paintings are illustrated in color — major works in full-page plates, often with details — and fully catalogued, some with revised attributions. Commentary compares different paintings in an artist’s oeuvre and points out the influences of other painters.
