It gives historical background on the palace’s residents whose commissions and taste shaped the work of the artists and craftsmen: Pavel I, Maria Fedorovna in the late eighteenth century; Mikhail Pavlovich, Konstantin Nikolaevich, Konstantin Konstantinovich, and Ioann Konstantinovich during the nineteenth. Drawings, plans, new photos and archival photos document how the palace and park structures were modified over the years. A central theme in the volume is the destruction of the palace during the Nazi invasion and the feat of curators, restorers, and architects rebuilding it to its original glory.
