St. Petersburg: Herm, 2011. Sewn pb. Six museums contributed paintings, drawings, works of sculpture, architectural plans and models to the Hermitage exhibition of which this catalogue is based. The Menshikov Palace was the grandest building in St. Petersburg in — Peter the Great's reign, the first era of the imperial capital's history. After Peter's death and Menshikov's disgrace it housed an elite military school, the First Cadet Corps. After the second World War it became a branch of the Hermitage Museum and was restored to its early eighteenth-century style and became a permanent exhibition "Russian Culture of the First Third of the Eighteenth Century." : Illustrations comprise portraits of Peter the Great, Menshikov, and their contemporaries; prints commemorating the events of the period; swords, firearms, and cannons; clocks and watches, medals and coins, books; written documents on the Cadet Corps; plans and design drawings for restoring the palace and turning it into a Hermitage gallery. The last chapter on restoration conveys vividly the success of the Hermitage's staff, juxtaposing, for example, a fragment of seventeenth-century French silk used as a wall covering with a photograph of the restored interior. 256 p., 28 cm, approx 200 color illus., Rus. with title page and summary in ENGLISH.
