Velikii Flamandets: dve kartiny Rubensa iz sobraniia V. A. Logvinenko v sobranii Ermitazha ./The Great Fleming: Two Paintings from the Collection of V. A. Logvinenko in the Collection of the Hermitage

St. Petersburg: Herm, 2004. sewn cl. The two paintings studied here, “The Union of Earth and Water” and “The Adoration of the Shepherds,” have been lent to the Hermitage, and are being exhibited with its rich permanent collection of paintings by Rubens, two of which bear the same titles. The exhibition thus offers a unique chance to explore such basic art-historical questions as the aura of uniqueness, authorizing replicas and identifying counterfeits, and the extent to which an artist executes his work alone or delegates parts or phases of it to pupils or apprentices. The authors also touch on a topical area for Russian museology: major private collections are being formed in Russia for the first time since the 1917 revolution, and the question arises, how can they be made more accessible. The collaboration between the Hermitage and V. A. Logvinenko may set a precedent. The text presents conclusions of experts on the authenticity of the Logvinenko paintings based on technical and stylistic analysis, traces the provenance of the works, and discusses how they differ from the variant paintings in the Hermitage. Large plates, nicely reproduced details of the paintings, and special technical illustrations (e.g., x-ray images) will facilitate study. 182 pp., 9 x 13 ins., 74 b-&-w illus., 62 color, sewn cl., Rus. and ENGLISH.
