St. Petersburg: Gatchina / Lait, 2014. sewn cl. Gatchina Palace was built in the mid eighteenth century on land outside St. Petersburg given by Catherine the Great to the favorite who helped her accede to the throne, Grigorii Orlov. Orlov saw the palace as a grand hunting lodge in the manner of Chambord designed for François I on the Loire and acquired for his sport arms from all over Europe, historical and contemporary, works from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. After his death in 1783  Catherine gave Gatchina to her son Grand Duke Paul (later emperor), who added works to the collection as did later emperors and members of the imperial family. This third volume of the catalogue of Gatchina's arms collection covers firearms from Germany, Saxony, Thuringia and Poland at the time of its union with Saxony. Beautifully produced with many details of the works, the catalogue shows the kinship of arms to other areas of applied and decorative arts such as jewelry, metalwork, and wood carving. 417 p., approx. 800 color illus., Rus. with introduction in ENGLISH.
