The Hermitage is an active centre of archaeological research operating over twenty expeditions. Soon after its foundation the Hermitage established close ties with Russian archaeological services and became home to the Imperial Archaeological Commission (created in 1859) for many years to come. In the 19th and early 20th century the Hermitage mostly functioned as a custodian of historical materials; however, from the 1920s onwards many Hermitage scholars  have also initiated archaeological expeditions. This book follows the rich history of the Hermitage's archaeological missions, presenting field projects undertaken across Eurasia on burial mounds and tombs, shrines and temples, ancient settlements and cities. Most of the projects are land-based, with a number of underwater excavations being carried out on Neolithic pile settlements in the Russian North-West and Ancient Greek sites in the Crimea. Several generations of museum archaeologists have explored sites dating back to various ancient cultures and civilizations which span a timeline from the Stone Age to the mediaeval period. Their finds have become valuable contributions on ancient art and material culture.
