Zhenskie obrazy v khudozhestvennykh proizvedeniiakh Drevnego Egipta (Images of Women in Ancient Egyptian Literature)

Moscow: Librokom, 2009. Pb. This monograph traces the evolution of female images in ancient Egyptian literature through practically all periods of its history, from texts of the Old Kingdom period to late demotic works. Using the material of three different genres – ancient Egyptian tales and stories, didactic teachings, and love lyrics, the author analyzes the distinctive features and construction of female images, their role in the plot, their relations with male personages, and also the specific means of expression. Some conclusions have been made on a woman’s position and importance in ancient Egyptian society as a whole: the presence of gradual negative changes in the attitude to women – from a rather harmonious depiction of her as the beloved wife in the Old Kingdom sources, to disdain in texts of the later periods as a creature unworthy of good will. The book contains a copious bibliography of Russian and foreign sources, and an extensive English summary. 168 pp., 6 b-&-w illus., Rus. with summary in ENGLISH, 2009, Item #964
